FAQ

About

What is Radical.FM?

Online jukeboxes can only build playlists like iTunes; when the music is over, it is simply repeated, or you need to build another playlist. Other Internet radio stations often fail to deliver the music you really want to hear because they rely on a computer to guess what you like based on a few song or artist choices. Radical.FM, gives you complete control over all the music and other audio content you hear, in both radio, playlist, and RadCast formats.

Radical is now available worldwide with all music that has been uploaded by independent artists, bands and other content providers, as well as RadCast and TALK to host live shows. In Sweden, users also have unrestricted access to “label” music and Radical’s catalog of 22 million popular songs.

RadCast and TALK features allow users to create their own live radio stations, complete with their own voice, and unlimited audience potential. With these tools users and bands will be able to broadcast their own radio stations across the globe, engaging friends, fans, and other users in unprecedented ways.

How do I get Radical.FM?

Our service is totally free and open to anyone in the world with an Internet browser. Mobile development is underway. Sign up to be notified when we launch our mobile service. .

How does Radical differ from Pandora, Spotify, etc?

Radical.FM performs the services of both of these competitors, that is, Radical combines full-featured personal radio stations with On-Demand Playlist functionality. On the radio side, Radical does not try to 'guess' what music you might like based on a few song choices and subjective computer parameters. Instead, we offer a simplified way for anyone to access the skills of the entire broadcast radio industry. Similar to Satellite Radio, we have a massive library of songs divided into Genres (like CLASSIC ROCK, JAZZ, and DISCO). But we go beyond both Satellite and conventional Internet radio by allowing you to blend as many genres as you would like and to assign each a value of 1 through 10 relative to the others. Radical is now available worldwide with all music that has been uploaded by independent artists, bands and other content providers, as well as RadCast and TALK to host live shows. In Sweden users also have unrestricted access to “label” music and Radical’s catalog of 22 million popular songs. The result is an accurate personalized mix; an endless stream of just the kind of music and other audio content you want to hear.

Radical Stations and Playlists

What is a Radical Station?

Stations created on the MY STATIONS tab are the mix of genres designed by you which provide an endless and tailorable stream of just the music you want to hear. You are able to assign each genre a value from 1 ("I like it") to 10 ("I love it"), making sure that you hear more songs from your favorite genres.

Radical Stations also offer a large degree of musical curation beyond our slider functionality: you can increase the frequency of a particular song by pressing “Thumbs Up,” remove a song or artist from rotation by pressing “Block,” or add a song directly to a playlist by pressing the “Add To” button.

Radical also offers users the unique ability of adding your own playlists of 50 or more songs directly into a station, allowing you complete control over the music you experiences when your station streams.

Importantly, you can create as many Radical stations as you like.

Note that Radical Stations are currently available only in Sweden. Outside of Sweden, they will be available once the uploaded music and content reaches a critical mass.

How do I edit a Station?

There are several ways to edit a station:

  1. Adjust the slider knobs up or down to increase or decrease the percentage of music and other content drawn from that particular Genre or Playlist. If the slider knob is set at the bottom and the red light on the knob is off, you will no longer hear that Genre or Playlist. If a slider knob is set to the top, you will hear content from that Genre/Playlist at top priority. The slider that is currently playing will have a green light.
  2. Add another Genre/Playlist by clicking the ADD button in the bottom of any blank slider. Check all desired Genres from the list, and click DONE to add these to your station.
  3. Delete a slider entirely from your station by clicking the red DELETE sign under the genre slider. A pop up window will open asking you to confirm your deletion.
  4. You can drag and drop sliders to move your Genre/Playlist into different positions on your player's dashboard. (Note: this has no effect on songs or other content  played and is only for your convenience).

Independent Artists and Bands

What is the difference between a Band or Artist Account and a Listener Account (user)?

A Band or Artist Account is strictly for musicians, bands, comedians, podcasters and spoken word artists (or their representatives) who intend to upload their songs or other audio materials, images, etc. to Radical.FM for free, worldwide distribution.

When you register as a Band or Artist, you also automatically registered as a User.

A User Account allows you to create stations and playlists and curate a musical experience, but does not offer the uploading functionality.

Both types of users will be able to use our RadCast and TALK features to be able to broadcast their own worldwide radio shows.

If I am a band or artist, who is listening the material that I uploaded?

Anyone and everyone throughout the world! Radical.FM caters to musicians, bands, comedians, podcasters and spoken word artists, and we know you want your material heard everywhere you can. Because we don't have to strike deals with major labels and their counterparts across the world, anyone with Internet access and an account to Radical can listen, comment, and even buy your content.

So don't be surprised if you take your band on tour to Serbia and find that you're their equivalent to Coldplay. It happens.

Does Radical make money from our music or content?

Nope. Radical makes nothing from your music or other materials. Links are available to your site and music or other band related materials can be marketed by you without any fees to Radical. Fans can buy from you or your preferred vendor, and you reap all the benefits!
